Piano Lessons in Burlington, Ontario
Itβs more than piano lessons - itβs a musical discovery.
About Me
Hi, Iβm Lydia!
Iβve been teaching for 14 years, and Iβve had the privilege of teaching in many wonderful communities β from Toronto, London and Oakville to towns throughout Bruce County. I recently got married and moved to Burlington, and Iβm so excited to continue sharing my love of music here in my new home.
I graduated from the University of Toronto with a Masterβs in Piano Performance and Pedagogy β a program that perfectly combines the two things Iβm most passionate about: performing and teaching. I also hold a Bachelor of Music degree from Wilfrid Laurier University. As a registered Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) teacher, I help students prepare for exams while fostering their love of music.
Outside of teaching, Iβve spent over a decade performing at a variety of events, including weddings, musicals, festivals, church services, and recitals, in Canada and South Korea.
When Iβm not teaching or performing, youβll probably find me staying active, playing sports, hiking, or enjoying some delicious Korean food. I also love spending time with my family, friends, and my sisterβs two energetic cockapoo puppies!
What I Want for My Students
I believe piano lessons should be about more than learning the notes on the page. My goal is to help students become curious, creative, confident musicians who develop a lifelong relationship with music.
-
I believe strong musicianship begins with learning to truly listen. Students are encouraged to explore not only what they are playing, but how it sounds and feelsβfrom tone and colour to dynamics, phrasing, movement, and expression. Through singing, ear training, playing by ear, and exploration at the piano, students develop a deeper connection with the music and learn to create sound with intention.
-
Once students learn to listen deeply and develop an idea of how they want the music to sound, they need the physical tools to bring that sound to life. I teach technique not simply as a set of exercises, but as a way of connecting the body to the music. Students explore healthy movement, coordination, touch, articulation, and the many ways we can use the piano to create different sounds, colours, and expressions.
I also encourage students to be creative beyond the written score through improvisation, composition, experimentation, and musical exploration. Depending on the student, lessons may include singing, movement, games, storytelling, or creating their own musical ideas. My goal is to help students move from simply reproducing what they see on the page to understanding, shaping, and creating music of their own.
-
My goal is for students to move beyond simply playing the notes on a page and discover their own musical voice. As they learn to listen deeply and develop the physical and creative tools to bring their musical ideas to life, I encourage them to make thoughtful choices, experiment, problem-solve, and express their own musical ideas.
Every student has a unique voice, and I want to give them the skills and confidence to discover and develop it. Ultimately, I hope my students become independent musicians who can listen, think, create, and make music that feels truly their own.
